Inspirational Fishing Icon • Guiness World Records • Shark Fins - Editorial by Dave Moran Issue #114

New Zealanders will recognize the name Graeme Sinclair, the presenter and producer of the television series Gone Fishin. A couple of days before going to press I was honoured to be invited to Graeme and Sandy’s home to celebrate with them, their business partners and friends, an outstanding achievement. Earlier that day at a ceremony in Government House, Auckland, the Governor General, the honourable Anand Satyanand, pinned to Graeme’s suit the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit medal, in… Continue

Underwater Rugby, Sydney, 21/22 November

The Australains have invited us over for an UWR tournament which will conclude with a Trans-Tasman Test for the Ocean Hunter Cup (they want to try and take it off us - we beat them in March).

The suggested date is the weekend of 21/22 November in or near Sydney. We will be sending teams over and selecting the best players for the Test.

The plan would look something like:
* Fly over Friday
* Play UWR Saturday
* Party Saturday night (if we have energy left)
* Hit the sea somewhere… Continue

Shark Finning - Shark Fin Trade NZ

Hi All,
Well this subject of Shark Finning and the Shark Fin Trade is one that truly sickens me to think that for a country like NZ that is supposed to be clean green and eco friendly. Even though many of us try and do our part for events like Project Aware days NZ is far from being really eco friendly. Just looking at the Shark Fin Trade for starters, the ministry of fisheries states that we do NOT have a shark fishing or finning industry but in actual fact this is far from the truth.

Commerci… Continue

The New Zealand Government is Pro Marine Reserves – Yeah Right!

One of the things I enjoy about being involved with divers and the dive industry is the people that you meet. In general divers are usually down to earth people plus they seem to have their feet firmly on the ground!

Once a year a couple of people are recognized for the efforts they have either put into diving or evolving environmental issues, or a mixture of both. At the recently he… Continue

Killing marlin – attitudes are changing
It has been interesting to see a change in people’s reactions to the killing of marlin and other large game fish.

The New Zealand Herald, which is the largest selling newspaper in New Zealand, has run pictures of young spearfishermen and line fishermen standing proudly by their catch. In recent times when such pictures appear, the Herald receives a number of Lett… Continue

Interestingly enough the Mole at Dunedin is a "Voluntary Marine Reserve" where visitors are asked not to take anything. It seems to be working however the sign was rather faded when I was last there so consequently there were a few asians fishing ...

Really? That's appalling! Oh, hang on, is that actually true or just, y'know, erm, not? It's just that I tried 'Googling' but had no joy. Call me a cynic.... ( ;-) ) but it wouldn't be the first time so called conservationists have invented facts ...

Yeah, it's really got me stumped. Initially I wondered whether the areas which Goat was being compared to mightn't be the same types of habitat-that apples weren't being compared with apples as it were. I mean, the Goat is a prime stretch of snapp...

Mr Squid, You are way outside the topic IMO. The question / discussion was nothing to do with the english language (which is an amalgam of other languages anyway - and both Chinese and Spanish have more speakers globally), free diving etc. BUT di...

In the modern world, I don't think anything that comes under the excuse as 'Traditional' is justified. Namerican Indians use 'Traditional Rights' to slaughter marine mammals in very 'untraditional' methods and then sell a good percentage to the N...
